So, the rumored Google Pixel 8A, the cheaper Google Pixel 8 model, has shown up on FCC certification website recently, indicating that we can expect the announcement to happen soon.
Design & Date of the Pixel 8a
But when can we expect the phone to hit the market? Well, the company recently announced that the May I/O event will happen on the 14th of May this year. So, I think we have a good idea about the announcement date now at least.
But what else do we know about this phone? but let me first talk about the design because it was leaked back in October 2023. The design is more of a ‘googly’ design, I would say. It’s a cuter variant of the Google Pixel 8, more curvy and rounded in every way.
It will have the metal sides, the same Google Pixel camera bar, the same exact design as the Pixel 8, but cuter.
Specs of the Pixel 8a
The headlining feature of the Pixel 7A was the 90Hz display, compared to the 60Hz on the Pixel 6A. The Pixel 8A will actually have a 120Hz refresh rate. But the screen size will still be the same 6.1 inches, just like the pixel 6A and pixel 7A.
The native resolution will still be 1080p, by the way, and the brightness is going to be 1400 nits of peak brightness compared to 1000 nits of the last model.
Another thing that is coming, and this is something that is actually a secret project as of yet, is the display port output support. The flagship Google Pixel 8 series introduced this feature. Now the Pixel 8A will also support it.
In the Android 14 beta release, Google finally enabled this in a limited form, but they did it. So something about it is going to be on the stage too at the May I/O event. I’m expecting a Samsung DeX-like desktop mode for the stock Android phones, which is pretty cool.
Now we know why the Pixels are popular, right? The camera experience. Though, this time, camera sensors are going to be identical to the Pixel 7A.
The Google Pixel 8A is rumored to feature the IMX 712 sensor, a 13-megapixel sensor for both the ultrawide angle and the selfie camera and 64MP IMX787 Main camera. Despite the hardware remaining unchanged, we can anticipate processing improvements and new features, thanks to the Tensor G3 processor.
The Pixel 8A will also come with the same upgraded chipset, which is expected to power the device efficiently. The Tensor G3 chipset is a significant upgrade for the Pixel A-series models.
For the Pixel 8A, the Tensor G3 might be slightly underclocked compared to the flagship phones. Benchmark scores from last year indicate that the Pixel 8A powered by Tensor G3 has a Cortex X1 core running at 2.91 GHz, Cortex A75 cores at 2.37 GHz, and Cortex A510 cores at 1.7 GHz, with 8 GB of RAM paired with a Mali G715 GPU.
The single-core score is 1,218, and the multicore score is 3,175, which is quite impressive for its price range. This also suggests an upgraded ISP for better processing and a smarter modem, possibly Samsung’s modem 5300.
The packaging of the chipset in the Pixel 8A will differ from the flagship models. The flagship models use FOPLP (fan-out wafer-level packaging), while the Pixel 8A’s G3 will use IPOP (integrated package-on-package), which is thicker and hotter than FOP LP but also cheaper.
While details about the battery are not confirmed, it’s speculated to be between 4,400 to 4,600 mAh. The Pixel 7A offers 18W fast charging and 7.5W wireless charging, which might be the same for the Pixel 8A. Storage-wise, it’s expected to have a UFS 3.1, 128 GB base model, maybe we’ll see a 256GB storage option as well.
