Apple enthusiasts have long come to expect a premium price tag for the ecosystem’s polish, performance, and longevity. However, massive, sudden price adjustments across the Mac and iPad lineups have fundamentally shifted the value proposition. With costs rising globally—and significantly more so in markets like India—many consumers are finding that the “entry-level” door is no longer open.
If you’ve been saving up for an upgrade, you might want to pause. Here is why the latest price hikes make the Mac Mini and MacBook Neo much harder to recommend right now.
The “Apple Intelligence” Tax and Rising Memory Costs
Apple has confirmed that the recent price hikes are driven by a severe shortage of memory chips (DRAM and NAND). As AI data centers hoard supply, the cost to build consumer electronics has skyrocketed. Apple has reached a point where they are no longer absorbing these costs, passing the burden directly to you.
Why the MacBook Neo Misses the Mark
- Performance vs. Price: Initially launched as a breakthrough $599 laptop, the Neo’s value has been erased by the new $699 base price.
- The “Smartphone Chip” Limitation: While the A18 Pro is efficient, it lacks the professional-grade headroom of the M-series chips found in the MacBook Air, making it a difficult sell for anyone looking to grow into their workflow.
- Base Spec Constraints: Sticking with 256GB of storage in 2026 is limiting. You are paying more for the same base experience that was already considered the bare minimum.
The Mac Mini: From Value King to Budget-Buster
The Mac Mini M4 was once the industry gold standard for performance-per-dollar.
- The $200 Jump: The shift from $599 to $799 isn’t just a minor increase; it’s a 33% price hike that moves the device into a different budget category entirely.
- International Disparity: In markets like India, the Mac Mini has seen a staggering price jump (from ₹59,900 to ₹94,900), turning an “affordable” desktop into a luxury purchase.
Price Comparison: The Current Reality
The following table outlines how the pricing has shifted. Note the significant difference between the US and international impacts.
| Product | Previous Price (US/INR) | Current Price (US/INR) |
| Mac Mini (M4) | $599 / ₹59,900 | $799 / ₹94,900 |
| MacBook Neo | $599 / ₹69,900 | $699 / ₹79,900 |
| 13-inch MacBook Air | $1,099 / ₹1,19,900 | $1,299 / ₹1,49,900 |
| 13-inch iPad Air | $749 / ₹84,900 | $949 / ₹1,04,900 |
Should You Wait or Buy?
Given the current market volatility and component shortages, prices are unlikely to drop in the near term. If your current machine is still functional, holding onto it for another year is the smartest financial move.
- Look for Refurbished Units: Check Apple’s official refurbished store. While inventory is sparse, you may be able to snag an M4-series device at “pre-hike” pricing.
- Skip the Mid-Tiers: If you absolutely must upgrade, don’t settle for the base-spec Neo or Mini at these inflated prices. The lack of storage and RAM headroom means you’ll be looking to replace them sooner than you’d like.
- Prioritize Function Over “New”: For many users, an older M1 or M2 model still performs admirably. Unless your workflow specifically demands the latest Neural Engine for on-device AI tasks, the extra cost for the latest model is rarely justified by real-world gains.
